About this deal

Five activities based around the DERIC reading skills; decode, explain, retrieve, interpret and choice using the text The Worrysaurus by Rachel Bright. She explores the lovliness of words and the magic of pictures, revelling in a world of jam-eating miniature bears and other made-up animals. It might be me, but teaching „Carpe Diem“ to pre-schoolers, they of the „why do I need to go to bed? Why do I need to brush teeth? Why do I need to go to the bathroom before long travels?“ seems extremely, nay horribly, insanely ill-advised. Can Worrysaurus find a way to chase his fears away and have fun? The perfect book to help every anxious little dinosaur let go of their fears and feel happy in the moment. About This Edition ISBN: Rachel Bright is a wordsmith, illustrator and professional thinker of happy thoughts. She has written several books for children, including Love Monster, The Lion Inside and The Koala Who Could– winner of the Evening Standard Oscar’s Book Prize and the Sainsbury’s Book Award. Rachel lives on a farm near the seaside, with her partner and their two young daughters.

The Worrysaurus Board Book by Rachel Bright - Waterstones

She loves nothing more than getting all inky in the printmaking studio where she’ll often work super late, when there’s magic in the air. She collects alphabets and hats and has a Nissan Figaro car which everyone says looks like a matchbox toy. This reading unit also includes 6 fully resourced lessons around the core theme of personal, social and emotional development as part of the PSED curriculum. Use talk to help work out problems and organise thinking and activities, and to explain how things work and why they might happen

I have been looking for a book to help children understand their feelings and worries that they may have, and this is it! The Worrysaurus is a little dinosaur who has lots of anxious thoughts about what could go wrong in his daily life, but he is brave and finds several ways to conquer them and is happy. The language is easily accessible, and the author’s use of rhyme produces a lullaby-effect to soothe children and make them feel calm.

The Worrysaurus by Rachel Bright is a great lighthearted text

Poor Worrysaurus. He is overcome with worries. Then he remembers a little saying his mom shares, and his worries flutter away.

About Rachel Bright

The Worrysaurus is a little dinosaur who worries about daily challenges in his life but manages to find small things to conquer those fears! She runs a really long way every day and has done loads of ultra-marathons all over the world, the most recent of which include the Atlantic Coast Challenge (3 marathons in 3 days) and the Midnight Sun marathon in the Arctic Circle.

This reading unit comprises 6 weeks of shared reading sessions, focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from Development Matters. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity for the practise of prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference. Exploring vocabulary relating to the word ‘worry’ using a word map, including exploring definitions, synonyms and antonyms and putting the word into context. The book introduces the idea of butterflies representing a worry and the feeling of having butterflies in your stomach. I would discuss this with a class, and it would help them to talk about their feelings, for example: “I have a big butterfly today”. Younger children who tend to struggle wording their emotions/ feelings could really benefit from this. We would create a list of things to do when you have a worry, inspired by the book, such as sharing it with a trusted adult and doing things that make you happy. I would give each child a picture of a happy box and ask them to draw or write all of the things that bring them joy. I would then put these up on our well being wall and encourage the children to use it when they are feeling blue. All about a dinosaur who plans a whole day but then he worries about lots of things for his adventure. His overthinking starts to get in the way and he has butterflies. He remembers his mum's words about chasing the worries away. A fun and reassuring tale about dealing with worries from the author of the bestselling The Lion Inside. It's a beautiful day and Worrysaurus has planned a special picnic. But it isn't long before a small butterfly of worry starts fluttering in his tummy...
