The THOTH TAROT CARDS were painted by Lady Frieda Harris (1877-1962) under the guidance of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) during WWII.

I have the Mirror of the Soul companion book by Gerd Ziegler, which wonderfully explains the meaning behind the details of the artwork. Written by Aleister Crowley, Diary of a Drug Fiend tells the story of young Peter Pendragon and his lover Louise Laleham, and their adventures traveling through Europe in a cocaine and heroin haze. Though I own and have read several other decks, for the past three years, this is the only deck I use for readings. For someone used to the RWS or Marseille style Courts in which the King and Queen are both seated, and the Knight is the figure on the horse this can be initially confusing.

The magnificent Crowley Thoth Tarot Deck contains the kabbalistic and astrological attributions described in Aleister Crowley's The Book Of Throth. Crowley and Harris were meticulous in their work, and Harris painted some of the cards as many as eight times. I bought the large Green boxed edition, and the more normally-sized Lilac boxed edition (not the blue Swiss one or the mini-card version). I feel like I am light years behind in reviewing this deck, which, along with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, is not only a popular deck, but a classic Tarot deck. A number of cards have been renamed to better reflect Crowley’s understanding of the deeper meanings of the card i. If you want to use the cards in ritual - especially if you practice ceremonial magick - then this deck is perfect.This is a controversial deck, to be sure – in large part because Crowley himself is such a controversial figure (by choice). Although Lady Harris knew little about Tarot and its symbolism, under the guidance of Crowley she transposed all subtilities of his ideas into her paintings.
