Although usually considered to be the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, the small hamza ( ء‎ ( ʔ )) that sits on top of أ‎ ( ʔ ) is really the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, and the tall column is its bearer.

Also new recordings added in the second edition included readings of the vocabulary as isolated words and used in a sentence, a "Culture" section with things like songs and interviews with native Arabic speakers, and new listening exercises. This book leaves most of the essential vocabulary and grammar to the second book in the series: Al-Kitaab. You’ll first see baa joined to yaa –and here, you’ll note that yaa’s two dots move from under the curve to under the line.
